چکیده

The calculation of the conductance of ballistic rings requires a theory that goes well beyond the Kubo-Drude formula. Assuming “mesoscopic” circumstance of very weak environmental relaxation, the conductance is much smaller compared with the naive expectation. Namely, the electro-motiveforce induces an energy absorption with a rate that depends crucially on the possibility to make connected sequences of transitions. Thus the calculation of the mesoscopic conductance is similar to solving a percolation problem. The “percolation” is in energy space rather than in real space. Non-universal structures and sparsity of the perturbation matrix cannot be ignored. The latter are implied by lack of quantum-chaos ergodicity in ring shaped ballistic devices.

Quantum beating in ring conductance: Observation of spin chiral states and Berry’s phase

– We propose and demonstrate experimentally a novel configuration for observing spin interference effects in mesoscopic rings. Using this configuration, in which the conducting ring and the tangential current lead form a single collimating contact, we have observed the spin quantum beating in the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations. We demonstrate that the beating is the result of the superp...

Graphene rings in magnetic fields

We study the conductance of mesoscopic graphene rings in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field by means of numerical calculations based on a tight-binding model. First, we consider the magnetoconductance of such rings and observe the Aharonov–Bohm effect. We investigate different regimes of the magnetic flux up to the quantum Hall regime, where the Aharonov–Bohm oscillations are suppre...

7 Rectification and nonlinear transport in chaotic dots and rings

We investigate the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of mesoscopic conductors and the current generated through rectification of an alternating external bias. To leading order in applied voltages both the nonlinear and the rectified current are quadratic. This current response can be described in terms of second order conductance coefficients and for a generic mesoscopic conductor they f...
